All over the world, the use of pipelines are indispensable in transporting all kinds of liquids and gases such as: gasoline, crude oil, diesel fuel, natural gas, water, sewages, etc, from their point of origin to their point of destination. Most of these contain dangerous and hazardous materials. Any damage therefore to the pipelines would have catastrophic consequences to both people and the environment. In most cases, the pipelines pass through long stretches of remote land sites and monitoring them can be quite a challenge. With millions of dollars in investments and regulatory monitoring requirements, a reliable, proven monitoring solution is a key element of operational success.

The protection of both land based and sub-aqua pipelines against third party intrusion, (illegal tapping, terrorist action), leakages and earth displacements, is a high priority in all countries, particularly in times of heightened tension but until now this has been notoriously difficult to achieve effectively.

 

The CPP-GUARD/308 is a passive solution. Both the tribo and vibro cables are used as sensors. The cables are buried along side either the underground or exposed pipelines. Regardless of pipeline length, it has the ability to detect potential attack and alert authorities before potential harm or damage occurs to a pipeline. Any disturbing action such as accidental damage, illegal tapping, terrorist activity, vandalism, excavations, digging or drilling, explosions, bullet strikes, agricultural activities, earth movements, leakages etc, will be detected immediately. Our system is unaffected by weather or animal activity.

Functions

The Casstel CPP-GUARD/308 has been designed to monitor and identify specific hazards to all pipeline functional types. Irrespective of area applied, the CPP-GUARD/308 carries out the following functions:

• Third party intrusion detection
• Leakage detection
• Earth movement detection
• Pipeline Congestion Monitoring

 

Third Party Intrusion Detection

Third Party Intrusion or disturbances such as digging, ploughing, vandalism, oil tapping, etc, can be detected through distributed temperature measuring of sensor signals and strain monitoring before any damage is done to the pipeline.

 

 

Leakage Detection

Excessive deformations caused by earthquakes, landslides or collisions with ship anchors, corrosion, wear, material flaws or even intentional damaging are all causes of pipeline leakage.

The CPP-GUARD/308 can detect and localise this anomaly using distributed temperature sensors. Fluid pipelines generate a hot spot at the location of the leak, while gas pipelines generate a cold spot due to the gas pressure relaxation. These localized thermal anomalies can be detected by a distributed measurement with good spatial, time and temperature resolution such as being provided by both the tribo and vibro cable deployment.

 

Soil/Earth Movement

Using the temperature measuring scale, CPP-GUARD/308 is able to determine the increased stresses on pipelines due to external actions such as landslides and earthquakes or to internal causes such as a reduction of cross-section due to corrosion and wear

 

Pipeline Congestion

Over time and as a function of hydrocarbon chemistry, oil flow lines can become clogged by the formation of wax or hydrate deposits.  These deposits restrict the pipe diameter limiting oil flow. When such a situation occurs, Casstel pipeline monitoring is able to detect the congestion and give the required alarm signal.
